How To Add An Elegant Look To Streetwear
Being a tomboy most of my life, I never thought I would be interested in adding an elegant twist to my looks. Before I decided to make this drastic change to my wardrobe, I was very passionate about making sure I didn’t dress feminine because of how powerful it felt not being influenced by society’s view on how women “should dress.”
To this day, I’m still very passionate about this topic, but as I have been learning more and more about the history of fashion, I no longer feel closed off to the idea anymore. This year is bringing out the Kaylee I haven’t seen in over ten years, and I’m more than ready for it!
Today I will be speaking about five different ways you can implement a more posh feel to your streetwear. As usual, I will add a few affordable look-alike garments below each category. I’ll also be sure to leave reviews of each product if possible. If there are no reviews on a product below, you should know that I made sure the website is Trustpilot approved. Let’s get started!
In the 1950s the babushka was a very luxury item for most women’s wardrobes. But the trend started slowly dying down in the ’70s when the babushka transformed into bandana caps and neck scarves for women and men.
Streetwear was born out of the New York City hip hop culture in the early 1980s. But ever since Tupac, Coolio & many other rappers in the ’90s started wearing bandanas, it paved the way for a ton of street-style trends we see today.
For the past few years, we’ve seen Donatella Versace, Gucci, Max Mara, J. W. Anderson, Richard Quinn, Michael Kors, and many more designers bring the various styles of headscarves seen in the past back to the runway. Adding this accessory to your street-style fits is a must for the upcoming seasons!
The boyfriend jean craze started in the 1960s when Marilyn Monroe was seen on the set of Misfits wearing the baggy fit. She would often wear loosely-fitted jeans in contrast to her exceedingly feminine persona to create more masculine beauty.
The 21st century has been the prime time for celebrities to share this trend with their fans. Kate Holmes, Rihanna, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Victoria Beckham, Gwen Stefani, Gigi & Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Aniston, and many more well-known faces have made this look more than appealing to their audiences.
Lots of people prefer oversized hoodies, t-shirts, or blazers with their bulky jeans. That all boils down to personal preference. But recently, social media, magazines, and runways have been adding a more discreet & posh feel to the virile looks. Baggy jeans are certainly a modern-day necessity in streetwear today as they’re being worn by women everywhere around the globe! In 2021 consider pairing these chic-fitted tops with over-sized denim.
I will not dive deep into the history of belts because getting into that could take hours to read (lol). But we can all agree that belts have been around for years because they are such universal accessories that anyone can pull off.
The iconic Gucci belt has been a trending item for a long time. Pairing a blazer with biker shorts, then adding the strap around the waist has become increasingly popular. Also, let us not forget the ever-continuous and superior movement of denim jeans! Just adding a belt to these bottoms can make your whole outfit pop.
There are times when this accessory is needed and time’s where they should be left out. When you know you know, am I right? Whenever the time is right, you should know that it doesn’t have to be a $500 Gucci belt. Thrifting till you find one for a few dollars is a great option. Or you can check out the options below! (that chain belt is quite lovely).
When you think “beret” and an image of a cool-looking French artist might pop into your head. These babies have been around since the 15th century, but they had not established the name “beret” at this time. Instead, they were called “felt hats” and they were favorited by the poorest classes back in the day.
Fast forward to the 19th century & the black beret becomes a fashion statement for women. In the 1920s, in France, artists, musicians, actresses, writers, and poets were all seen wearing the felt cap. In the 1940s, World War II turns the beret into wartime essential. This could’ve been because of their universal appeal that spread from country to country, or because of how cheap they were to manufacture.
Ever since the 2000s, the political and fashionable world has been able to collide harmoniously; since then we’ve seen designers and celebrities pulling off these caps. People everywhere are still adding them into their modern-day streetwear, and boy oh boy… it’s a vibe.
The outfits above are great examples of how adding one of these hats to your streetwear can give an eccentric & divine feel. I will also link a few beret options below for you!
“I’m very organized these days, and I keep my life in my handbag, like most women.” — Britt Ekland
I think we can empathize with Britt’s words here.
For decades purses have been known as being a tote big enough to carry all of your on-the-go essentials. While growing up, I remember my mom always buying these huge purses that I’m sure could carry 24 water bottles. Little did we both know that miniature handbags would be a thing later on. It can be hard to fit your whole life in a tiny purse… but if your life can consist of only credit cards and cash, then this purse is for you.
Tiny handbags come in all shapes and sizes throughout the web! Lizzo promoted one of the smallest ones yet by Valentino; the two-inch rubberized bag is $258 and unfortunately sold out, but I will leave a link to the post here. Another wildly popular small purse worn by Kendall Jenner frequently is from Jacquemus and retails for $550. I love it, I want it, but I’ll pass on the price!
As I was doing some research for this blog post, I found some of the cutest mini purses online at an affordable price. I’ll leave a few options below for you to take a look at!
